Insulating Your Interior Walls

For 2×4 walls, use R-13 kraft-faced insulation in rolls or batts, or maximize your energy efficiency with R-15.

For 2×4 walls, use R-13 kraft-faced insulation in rolls or batts, or maximize your energy efficiency with R-15.

To make the job easier, use PINKPlus® FIBERGLAS® Insulation. Less itch, less dust, and no staples needed!

Kraft- or Foil-Faced Insulation with Vapor Retarder

This type of insulation has either a foil-backed facing or kraft paper layer attached. The attached facing layer helps control the amount of moisture vapor that passes through the insulation that could collect inside ceilings, exterior walls and floors. Kraft and foil facings are combustible and have to be covered with an approved interior finish (i.e., drywall).

Rolls

Rolls are long strips of insulation rolled into bales. You measure the length you need and cut it off with a utility knife. Rolls are best for covering large open areas, like attics and floors.

Batts

Batts are pre-cut lengths of fiberglass insulation. Batts are available unfaced, or with aluminum foil or paper facing.

Measure the Area of your Interior Walls

To determine the size of the area you are insulating, follow these steps:

  1. Measure the height and the length of the interior wall you wish to insulate.
  2. Don’t forget to measure the width of the space between the wall studs (this will be approximately 14.5"), so you’re sure which products to choose.
  3. Multiply the wall’s height by the wall’s length:

    Example:

    8 ft. High
    × 150 ft. Long
= 1,200 sq. ft. of Interior Wall

The following products are recommended for use on interior walls:

Installation Tips

  • You may find it faster and easier to use pre-cut batts rather than continuous rolls. Each piece of insulation is manufactured to the size of the most typical framing, which usually is built either 16" or 24" on center, and about 92" high.
  • To prevent air infiltration, caulk and seal around the band joist and penetrations, such as plumbing, electrical lines, cable lines, and HVAC and dryer vents.
  • Make sure the insulation fits snugly against the studs and completely fills the cavity to the top and bottom plates. You’ll want to cut insulation to fit snugly around obstructions, such as electrical boxes, plumbing and plumbing vent lines.
  • It is easier to cut insulation when placing it on a board with the kraft facing down.
  • Install vapor retarder toward the building’s interior. In the Gulf Coast and in Florida, local building codes may not allow for an interior vapor retarder, or may call for the vapor retarder to be installed toward the outside of exterior walls.

Note: Kraft facing is flammable and cannot be left exposed. When using kraft-faced insulation, an interior finish material, such as drywall, should be installed as soon as the insulation is in place. Unfaced batts may be left exposed unless prohibited by local building codes.
