Helping Manage Sound Transmission in Your Home

More Comfort. More Quiet. Owens Corning EcoTouch® insulation brings a new level of comfort to your home. But it offers more than lower energy bills. The glass fibers in fiberglass insulation are also excellent at reducing the amount of sound traveling through the walls and floors of your home.

Acoustic Performance Comparable to Mineral Wool

Fiberglass and mineral wool are two of the most commonly used cavity insulations for acoustic control in walls & floors. Both materials are tested for acoustic performance and both meet or exceed building code requirements depending on the assembly. Sound Transmission Class (STC) is a single number rating used to compare various assemblies for their ability to reduce the amount of sound traveling through the assembly.

The tables below show STC ratings of the same wall assemblies with either fiberglass or mineral wool filling the cavity. The information is from a study, “Sound Transmission Through Gypsum Walls: Sound Transmission Results” Internal Report IR-693, performed at the National Research Council of Canada. This study was jointly funded by fiberglass, mineral wool, cellulose and other building material manufacturers.

On average, fiberglass batts have equivalent or better STC acoustical performance than nominal equivalent thickness, and higher density mineral wool insulation.

Fire Rating

Fiberglass insulation is naturally non-combustible becauseit is made from sand and recycled glass and it requires noadditional fire-retardant or chemical treatments.

Building/wall assemblies using fiberglass insulation achieve up to a two-hour fire resistant rating based on testing according to ASTM E119.

* Unfaced insulation made with a minimum of 99 percent by weight natural materials consisting of minerals and plant-based compounds.

** Certified by Scientific Certifications Systems to have a minimum of 58 percent recycled glass content with at least 36 percent post-consumer recycled and the balance pre-consumer recycled glass content.
